Why we built Actual Online Ruler
Actual Online Ruler was created around a simple everyday frustration: you need to measure something, but your physical ruler is out of reach. The device in your hand can still help, as long as the screen scale is calibrated for actual size.
Rather than relying on a generic image or camera measurement, this site uses browser-based display metrics and calibration data to produce a more realistic on-screen scale. That means the marks on the ruler match your screen’s physical dimensions as closely as possible after calibration.
Designed for practical measurements
The ruler is built to work with the object pressed against the edge of the screen. You can place it at the top, bottom, left, right, or all four edges. Calibration methods include a device preset, screen diagonal entry, or credit-card matching so the tool works with whatever information you have available.
This tool is intended for quick estimates of small everyday objects: stationery, craft pieces, jewelry, printed photos, cards, and hardware. It is not a substitute for certified measuring instruments used in engineering, construction, medical, or legal applications.
How privacy and reliability come first
Nothing you measure is sent to a server. Calibration settings are stored locally in your browser, and the page works without sign-in, permissions, or cameras. That keeps the experience fast, private, and focused on getting a good measurement with minimal fuss.
We build the tool to be responsive on phones, tablets, laptops, and monitors, while still keeping the interface clean and easy to use. Your chosen unit, edge placement, and calibration remain available on future visits unless you clear browser storage.
